THE CAVALIERS. Virginia is 18-2-1 on the season, coming off back-to-back shutout victories in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers prevailed against the nation’s second-highest scoring offense of Milwaukee and won 2-0 in the second round. They had a 6-0 win over High Point in the first round. The team’s two losses this season came from Penn State and No. 2 Florida State. Virginia’s loss to Florida State was 1-0 in the finals of the ACC Championship, losing their three-week reign at the No. 1 spot in the NCAA DI women’s soccer poll the following week. Virginia played Santa Clara earlier this season in the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational and won 1-0, with the game-winner by Virginia’s Lia Godfrey off of a free kick. BYU also lost to Santa Clara 1-0 on the road this season.
COUGARS VS. CAVALIERS. BYU and Virginia have faced each other two times, with Virginia winning both games. The first matchup dates back to 2001, and the Cavaliers won 3-2 on their home field. The most recent matchup occurred last season when the Cavaliers defeated the Cougars 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA tournament. That loss stunned BYU and had many Cougar players looking to avenge themselves this season.
SOUTHEAST NCAA BRACKET. The NCAA second round continues on Friday with South Carolina, who defeated No. 2 North Carolina, facing Hofstra at 12 p.m. MST. USC, the third seed, faces Penn State at 2:30 p.m. MST. If No. 4 BYU wins and No. 3 USC loses, BYU could host an Elite 8 matchup in Provo as the highest remaining seed in the region.
