Colohan Selected by the Orlando Pride in the 2021 NWSL Draft
PROVO, Utah — BYU senior midfielder Mikayla Colohan was selected by the Orlando Pride with the 14th overall pick in the 2021 National Women's Soccer League Draft on Wednesday.
The NWSL’s ninth annual draft included 10 teams making 40 selections over four rounds. It was the first NWSL Draft to be held virtually via videoconferencing and web streaming due to the pandemic.
A senior at BYU, Colohan will compete for the Cougars this spring, then finish her collegiate eligibility this fall before turning professional and joining the Orlando Pride.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play in the NWSL,” Colohan said “I’m excited to be a part of Orlando Pride organization and look forward to representing the city of Orlando. I plan to bring my very best and hope to help the Pride in any way I can.”
As a junior in 2019, the 5-foot-8 Colohan was the WCC Player of the Year, a finalist for the Honda Sport Award and a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. She scored 16 goals and added seven assists to lead BYU to a 21-1-1 record—the first undefeated regular season in school history. She then helped the cougars to the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA Tournament and a No. 5 final national ranking.
In three seasons at BYU, Colohan has started 48 of the 50 games she’s played, while scoring 23 goals and collecting 15 assists. She was named a United Soccer Coaches All-American as a sophomore and a junior and was also first team All-WCC both years.
Colohan also excels in the classroom being named a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American and a CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 honoree in 2019.
"Having the opportunity to play in the NWSL is an amazing opportunity for Mikayla," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "She is incredibly talented and has played such a vital role in our program's success over the past three years. We are excited to have her play for us this spring and next fall before turning professional and moving on to the NWSL”
