TUCSON, Ariz. — The BYU women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to Arizona in an overtime thriller Friday night at Mulcahy Field.

The first goal of the game came when Arizona (3-2-2) took a dangerous corner in the 32nd minute, heading the ball towards the goal, forcing senior goalkeeper Hannah Clark to make a save. Charlotte Brascia managed to get her foot on the ball off the deflection, putting it in the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

At halftime, Arizona had five shots compared to BYU’s two.

In the 49th minute, a Bizzy Bowen shot was the first of five consecutive shots by the Cougars (1-4-3), including one by Elise Flake that gave BYU a corner kick after a save by the Wildcats’ goalkeeper.

Madie Lyons Mathews scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute after receiving a pass from Nadia Gomes as she ran behind Arizona’s defense, placing the ball into the far side of the net for her second goal of the season.

At the end of regulation, the Cougars tallied 11 shots compared to the Wildcats’ seven. Gomes led all shooters with four, including one on goal.

Arizona netted the golden goal in the 92nd minute when freshman Amanda Porter found the back of the net, firing a shot towards near post, just past Clark.

On the night, Clark recorded three saves and six different Cougars managed to get shots off.

The Cougars return to South Field on Monday, September 18 at 1 p.m. MDT as they host Kansas. Live coverage will be available through BYUtv. Radio broadcasts can be heard on BYU Radio (Sirius XM 143) and ESPN 960 AM.
