BYU takes on Oklahoma in second round
PROVO, Utah – BYU women's soccer will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, on Thursday to take on Oklahoma in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Stone Stadium.
BYU Storylines
The No. 4 Cougars (17-2-1) beat UNLV 2-0 in the first round of the tournament to advance. That marked the fourth time in the last five years BYU has advanced past the first round.
Michele Vasconcelos scored the Cougars' first goal against the Rebels. Vasconcelos, the 2016 WCC Player of the Year, has scored a goal in six straight games. Elena Medeiros scored the second goal after also scoring a goal in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year. She did so against Utah Valley in a 1-0 win.
The BYU defense, anchored by 2016 WCC Defensive Player of the Year Taylor Isom, recorded its 13th shutout of the season against UNLV. Goalkeeper Hannah Clark has a save percentage this season of .868.
Oklahoma Storylines
The No. 25 Sooners (14-6-2) won their first NCAA tournament game in program history by knocking off SMU 1-0 in the first round. They've shown steady improvement since head coach Matt Potter's first year in 2012, when Oklahoma went 7-9-4.
Senior Liz Keester has paced the Sooners this season, with nine goals and six assists. Five of her goals this season have been game-winners.
Key wins for Oklahoma this season have come against Arizona, TCU and Texas. The Sooners beat the WCC's Loyola Marymount 4-1 on Aug. 21.
