No. 3 BYU ties Santa Clara 0-0 in WCC opener

PROVO, Utah – No. 3 BYU women’s soccer came away with a 0-0 tie against Santa Clara Thursday night at South Field, extending its unbeaten streak to nine games.

"We played an outstanding game," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "I was so impressed with the way we played. Those first 45 minutes were the best 45 minutes I believe we’ve played all year."

The Cougars went to 9-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in West Coast Conference play, while the Broncos' record changed to 3-4-4 (0-0-1).

BYU outshot Santa Clara 13-2 in regulation play before a scoreless tie sent both teams into overtime. They played two 10-minute, sudden-victory overtime periods. The Cougars outshot the Broncos 16-3 throughout the entire 110 minutes of play. Senior forward Ashley Hatch recorded five shots while freshman midfielder Lizzy Braby had three.

Rockwood was impressed with the play of her defensive line and midfielders.

"Collectively, our defense was really solid and our midfield really controlled things," Rockwood said. "We had some good looks, some great creativity."

The physicality of both teams showed as the Cougars and Broncos committed nine and seven fouls, respectively. 

Bronco goalkeeper Melissa Lowder picked up six saves. Cougar keeper Hannah Clark recorded two saves and her sixth shutout of the season.

The Cougars continue conference play against San Francisco on Monday, Oct. 3, at 5:30 p.m. MDT at South Field. The game will be televised on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network, ESPN 960 AM and BYU Radio.​
