No. 2 in first NCAA RPI of 2016
PROVO, Utah – BYU women's soccer is ranked No. 2 in the first NCAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI) of 2016, which came out Monday.
RPI is a tool that measures the strength of a team's schedule and how it performs against that schedule. The Cougars (7-1-0) loaded this year's schedule with quality opponents and have won six games in a row. BYU is 2-0 against ranked teams, beating No. 5 Penn State and No. 19 Ohio State—both on the road.
The Cougars were ranked No. 6 in last week's NSCAA poll, and await a new ranking on Tuesday. In the Hero Sports rankings, BYU is No. 2 as of Monday. In the Top Drawer Soccer poll, the Cougars are ranked No. 5.
At the close of the regular season, RPI is used to determine which teams will host and for how many rounds of the NCAA tournament. When BYU advanced to the Elite Eight in 2012, the Cougars played at South Field all the way to the quarterfinals.
Stanford (7-0-1), the team that eliminated BYU in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season, is No. 1 in RPI.
