PROVO, Utah – No. 13 BYU women’s soccer had to wait three hours after their 4-1 victory over Saint Mary’s on Saturday for things to go their way. The Cougars (15-2-2, 7-1-1) won their fourth consecutive West Coast Conference title and second straight outright championship after San Francisco fell to Portland 1-0.

“I’m proud of our team and all the effort everyone has put in,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “It means a lot to represent the WCC in this way.”

The four-straight conference championships have happened once before in BYU history between 1999 and 2002 in the Mountain West Conference. BYU has now won at least a share of the WCC championship in four of its first five seasons in the conference.

Twice before teams have won four-consecutive West Coast Conference titles. Portland won four from 2007 to 2010, while Santa Clara was a four-time champ from 2001 to 2004.

BYU finished with the same record as last year in WCC play, 7-1-1, when the Cougars clinched with a week to go. On Saturday, the Cougars had to wait until the final game of the night finished to know they had done enough for a conference title.

“We tried to get better with each game,” Rockwood said. “Going 7-1-1 in the WCC is a great accomplishment for us. It’s something that is not easily done. We’ll celebrate this weekend and get ready for next week on Monday.”

The Cougars will now wait to find out their NCAA tournament fate on Monday at 2:30 p.m. MT in the NCAA selection show streamed on NCAA.com.
