BYU opens spring with three indoor wins

PROVO, Utah - BYU women's soccer opened up its spring season with three wins in an indoor tournament held at BYU's Indoor Practice Facility. The Cougars defeated Idaho State 4-1, Weber State 5-1 and Westminster 5-0. Ashley Hatch scored four goals on the day, including a hat trick against the Wildcats.

In the Cougars' first game of the day, they defeated Idaho State 4-1. BYU scored three goals in the first half as Sarah Chambers sent in a corner kick which Ella Johnson put in the back of the net. Chambers scored the next two goals for BYU with assists from Jaiden Thornock and Hatch and again from Hatch and Kayci Griffin.

In the second half, Griffin again assisted on a goal, this time it was Niki Fernandes that put it in the back of the net.

In the second game, BYU beat Weber State 5-1. Hatch scored two goals in the first half on assists from Griffin on the first and Elena Medeiros as well as Griffin on the second.

In the second half, Hatch and Fernandes assisted on a goal by Thornock. Medeiros assisted on a goal by Griffin and Hatch finished her hat trick thanks to assists by Camille Green and Fernandes.

In BYU's final game of the night, the Cougars defeated Westminster 5-0. Hatch assisted on a Thornock goal and Thornock assisted on a Fernandes goal in the first half. In the second, Medeiros and Miranda Bailey assisted on a Chambers goal, Fernandes on a Medeiros goal and Chambers sent in a corner that was put in the back of the net by Hatch.

The games were two 25 minute halves and Hatch led all scorers with four goals. Chambers had three, Thornock and Fernandes two, and Johnson, Griffin and Medeiros each scored one.

The Cougars continue their spring slate as they travel to Tempe to face Arizona State and Northern Arizona on March 1.
