Hatch named WCC Player of the Week
Provo, Utah - BYU's freshman forward Ashley Hatch was named West Coast Conference women's soccer Player of the Week for Sep. 9. Hatch scored two goals in two games last week, helping the No. 6 Cougars remain undefeated.
Her second goal of the week was the most important as it sealed a 1-0 win over in-state rival Utah. Hatch was pushed in the box by the Utah goalkeeper and converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 88th minute. It was the first goal Utah had conceded this season.
On Labor Day in Baton Rouge, La., Hatch tied the game at 2-2 in the first half as she intercepted a defensive clearance and beat the keeper. BYU scored twice more in the second half to win 4-2 against the No. 25 Tigers.
Hatch is currently tied for the team lead in goals with Rachel Manning and leads the team in shots and shots on goal with 16 and 11, respectively. Hatch is the first freshman since Carlee Payne Holmoe to have started and scored in the first game of the season. Hatch is also on pace to be the first freshman to score double-digit goals since Payne Holmoe scored 13 in 2009.
