The BYU vs. Marquette women’s soccer game received the Game or Event of the Year award at the 2013 Governor’s State of Sport Awards hosted by the Utah Sports Commission, today.

“We appreciate this honor and the recognition given to us by the Utah Sports Commission,” said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood.  “They do an outstanding job in recognizing the amazing accomplishments of teams and athletes from the state of Utah. “

Coach Rockwood along with co-captains Erica Owens and Cami Jensen as well as All-American Lindsi Lisonbee Cutshall represented the team at the awards banquet.

In the category, the Cougars were up against the 2012 Tour of Utah, the 2012 Winter Dew Tour, the Utah Jazz vs. Dallas triple overtime victory and the BYU vs. Utah football game.

BYU advanced to the Elite 8 of the 2012 NCAA women’s soccer championships after defeating Marquette in penalty kicks in Provo on Nov. 17, 2012. The two teams battle through a scoreless 90 minutes of action and two sudden-death overtime periods before forcing the penalty kicks. The final penalty kick by Kayla Varner lifted the Cougar women onto the Elite 8.
