Smart Leads Cougars in Texas

DENTON -- Dayna Smart recorded one of her best nights of the season Saturday while leading the BYU women's gymnastics team on three events in a triangular meet with No. 15 Arizona and Texas Womens University in Denton Texas.

The Cougars were up and down on the night though recording a 193.725 while the Wildcats recorded a season-best 196.575 score. Host TWU turned in a 191.425 performance.

BYU came out with a good performance on vault. Smart led the way for the Cougars at 9.825 while Hayley Jensen added a 9.775 and Brittany Fischer tied her career-high 9.750 for BYU. Arizona's Karin Wurm was first at 9.900 while Nakia Westbrook led the Pioneers at 9.850.

Bars were slippery for the Cougars though as two gymnasts fell. Kylee Draper turned in a good night for BYU however with a 9.800. Capra and Willis each added a 9.775 and Jennifer Matthews recorded a 9.750 for the Cougars. Aubrey Taylor of Arizona was tops on the event at 9.850 and Courtney Arno was TWU's top performer at 9.775.

BYU did enjoy a good outing on beam tying their second highest score of the season at 48.875. Smart led the way for BYU with a second-place 9.875 while Kandis Kelly had a 9.825 and Alethea Boon added a 9.800 for the Cougars. Arizona's Aubrey Taylor captured first-place honors at 9.900 and Tonya Pipkorn was the Pioneers' top scorer at 9.775.

After recording their highest score of the season on floor against Southern Utah Wednesday, the Cougars had some struggles Saturday night. Smart recorded a strong performance on the apparatus though with a 9.825 to lead the Cougars while Kacie Capra and Lisa Willis each scored 9.750 for BYU. The Wildcats' Wurm was first at 9.900 while Pipkorn was again TWU's top finisher at 9.725.

Arizona took the top two spots in the all-around with Wurm recording a 39.400 for first-place honors while Danielle Hicks was second at 39.225. The Cougars' Capra was third at 37.825.

BYU will look to bounce back next weekend when it travels to Salt Lake City for a meet with national power and No. 2-ranked Utah Friday at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. It will be the Cougars last meet before NCAA Regionals.
