Cougars fall to Thunderbirds
CEDAR CITY -- The BYU women's gymnastics team recorded a season-high 194.050 and five Cougars recorded individual season and career highs, but it was not enough to overcome season-best performance from Southern Utah University falling 194.825 -- 194.050 Friday night in Cedar City. BYU is 3-3 on the year.
"They're a very good team," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said of the Thunderbirds. "They hit their routines. We made some errors and had to count a couple of falls. I'm proud of the way our girls hung in there though."
BYU started off with a season-high 48.525 on bars. Kacie Capra tied for first with a season-high 9.800. SUU had a good performance on vault however and took a 48.650 -- 48.525 lead after the first rotation.
Dayna Smart led the Cougars on vault with a 9.775 and Capra tied her career high with a 9.700. SUU led 97.400 -- 96.850 after the second rotation.
BYU recorded a season-high 48.875 on floor in their third rotation. The Cougars had season highs from Sierra Jacobs (9.875) and Lisa Willis (9.800) and a career high from Dayna Smart (9.850) on the event.
BYU had some struggles on beam late though, counting two falls. The Cougars did manage to take the top two spots though. Smart was first with a 9.850 and Kandis Kelly was second at 9.825.
SUU's Sheena Shaw tied for first with Leah Sakhitab on vault with a 9.800. Ashley Sharpe tied for first with BYU's Capra on bars at 9.800. Sakhitab took the all-around with a 39.125. Capra was second with a season-high 38.950.
The Cougars will be off next week before traveling to Idaho to take on Boise State on February 20.
