Three Cougars named weekly conference specialists

PROVO, UTAH — Three Cougars earned specialist of the week honors, the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference announced. Jill van Mierlo was named Beam Specialist of the Week, while Mackenzie Douglas and Shannon Hortman Evans shared Floor Specialist of the Week honors.

Van Mierlo posted a 9.900 on the balance beam last Friday against No. 10 California. The score led to BYU’s victory over Cal, 196.025 to 194.350, as well as van Mierlo winning the all-around title with a 39.175.

Douglas and Evans both earned Floor Specialist of the Week after matching career highs of 9.900 on floor. Their scores contributed to an event score of 49.225, the Cougars' highest event score of the meet.

BYU hosts Southern Utah this Friday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. MST in the Smith Fieldhouse. The meet will be broadcast live on BYUtv, and live stats can be accessed through the schedule page.
