PROVO, Utah - In the first official intrasquad meet of the preseason, the blue team edged out the white team as the Cougars faced each other on Nov. 21.

“I felt the white team was a little more stacked with some veteran talent, so having the blue team come out on top was a little unexpected,” head coach Guard Young said. “We have a great, strong freshman group, and those girls showed up.”

Shannon Hortman Evans posted a 9.90 on both bars and beam. Angel Zhong also scored a 9.90 on her beam routine. BYU freshmen Helody Cyrenne, Abbey Miner, Melanie Lockhart, Avery Bennett, Haley Pitou and Abby Boden all had strong performances in the meet.

This intrasquad not only provided practice in performing routines but also in receiving scores from one of the official judges.

"This was huge for us to get feedback from the judges that will actually judge these girls this year,” Young said. “It’s one thing for a coach to see the routine over and over again, but having a judge's evaluation is so valuable for us.”

The Cougars also host a Blue and White Intrasquad meet for fans on Friday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse. Admission is free.
