Johnson wins all-around on senior night

PROVO, Utah – Makenzie Johnson won the all-around with a score of 39.275, but BYU women’s gymnastics placed third totaling 194.400 in the final home meet of the season against Central Michigan and Utah State Friday at the Smith Fieldhouse.

“I wish we would have done a little better on beam,” BYU gymnastics head coach Brad Cattermole said. “I was very happy with floor. On the bars, I was really pleased with Brittni Wilde. This is her first meet competing as a real competitor in her career. She did a great job for us.”

Central Michigan placed first with a 196.150 with Utah State following with a 195.100. 

The Cougars started on the vault and Johnson led the team with a score of 9.825. Jill Van Mierlo’s 9.800 was good for second, while Mikaela Jones tied a vault season high of 9.725. After the first rotation, BYU led Utah State but trailed Central Michigan with a total score of 48.825.

During the second rotation on bars, the Cougars recorded a team season high of 49.050. Van Mierlo set a new career high with a 9.900. In her first meet of the season, Wilde’s 9.825 was second best for BYU on the bars. KayCee GassawayJohnson and Emily Vidmar all scored 9.775 each.

After the second rotation, BYU’s 97.875 was still good for second behind the Chippewas.

Johnson’s 9.800 led the way for the Cougars on the beam in the third rotation. Jordan Schult tallied a 9.725 and Vidmar’s score of 9.350 rounded on the top three for BYU in the event.

During the fourth and final rotation on the floor, Gassaway, Johnson and Vidmar all scored 9.875. Vidmar's 9.875 tied her season high, while Gassaway tied a career high with the 9.875.

The Cougars will now go on the road for a meet against Utah State in Logan on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. MDT.
