Cougars fall to No. 15 Broncos on the road

BOISE, Idaho – Despite setting a season high on floor exercise, the BYU gymnastics team fell to No. 15 Boise State 196.275–194.750 on the road Friday night.

"We started out on bars and we've been really good for the last five meets, but tonight we struggled and got off to a slow start," BYU gymnastics coach Brad Cattermole said. "On floor, we did unbelievably well and got a season high. We were awesome. Overall, we just didn't have our best meet. With only a few meets left, we have to figure out a way to be better." 

On bars, Jill Van Mierlo led the team with a career-high 9.875 with Makenzie Johnson following with a 9.800. For BYU’s third best score, KayCee Gassaway recorded a 9.775. Following the first rotation, the Cougars trailed Boise State 49.375–48.400. 

In the second rotation, Johnson and Van Mierlo led the team on vault with a 9.850 and 9.800, respectively. Jordan Schult finished with a 9.775, while Mikaela Jones earned a 9.650.

BYU set a season high on the floor exercise with a 49.250, led by Johnson who tied a season-high 9.900. Schult and Kyleigh Greenlief recorded career highs with a 9.850 and 9.775, respectively. Emily Vidmar set a season-high with a 9.875, while Gassaway finished with a 9.825.

In its last rotation, BYU totaled a 48.450 on beam with Van Mierlo leading the team with a 9.750. Vidmar followed with a 9.700, while Ashley Robinson and Schult both recorded a 9.675.

Van Mierlo and Johnson finished with a 39.225 and a 39.200, respectively, in the all around.

The Cougars return to the Smith Fieldhouse for senior night on Friday, March 6, to host Central Michigan. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. MST with live stats found on the BYU gymnastics schedule page
