Laie, HI – Senior Kristen Riley got the Cougars on the scoreboard nine seconds into the game, and BYU-Provo never looked back easily defeating BYU-Hawaii 88-27, Tuesday in the first game of the Hukilau Invitational.

The Cougars (5-2) were paced by sophomore guard Kim Parker’s season high 17 points along with her five rebounds, three assists and four steals in just 16 minutes of action. Riley also finished in double figures with 12.

“It was nice to be able to give several of our players some playing time and be able to rest our other kids ,” said head coach Jeff Judkins. “We have a very tough game on Thursday. I thought our bench gave us a good lift and we had a solid defensive effort from everyone.”

In the lopsided victory, a total of 13 Cougars got on the scoreboard. Senior co-captain Haley Steed led the way in assists dishing out a team and game high six while redshirt freshman Stephanie Rovetti had the most rebounds with six.

The Cougars finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line. They outrebounded BYU-Hawaii 46-34.

Three minutes into the game, the Seasiders picked up their first points from the free throw line. They would get their first field goal of the contest with 9:24 left in the half on a layup by Brianna Jessop after a 28-2 run by the Cougars. At the break, BYU’s defense held the Seasiders to just eight points, the second lowest points scored by a Cougar opponent in the program’s history.

Enjoying a 40-point advantage, 48-8 at the break, the Cougars would not let up in  second half going on a 19-9 run and taking a 69-17 lead with 13 minutes left in the game. They would go up by 60, 81-21 with 7:43 left to play.

For the Seasiders, Shayla Washington finished the game with 10 points with Taylor Mann grabbing a team high eight boards.

The Cougars continue play in the Hukilau Invitational, battling undefeated Pac-12 foe Arizona (5-0) on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. Hawaii Time. That game can be heard live on BYU Radio.
