BYU Plays Two Instate Rivals

On a two-game winning streak and a first place finish at the Hukilau Invitational in Laie, Hawaii, BYU’s women’s basketball team (5-3) plays two instate schools this week.

Thurs. Dec. 9 the Cougars are at Utah Valley University (1-6) in a 7 p.m., game that airs live on BYUtv. On Sat., Dec 11, BYU returns to the Marriott to host Weber State (2-3) in a 3 p.m., tip off.

About BYU

The Cougars are led in scoring by senior guard Mindy Bonham who averages 12.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Senior forward Coriann Fraughton follows contributing 10.1 points and grabs a team high 7.1 boards per contest.

Bonham tops the list in steals on the team with a total of 24 to date while senior guard Haley Hall leads the way in the assist category with a total of 40 for a 6.6 average per game.

Jazmine Foreman has the team’s best free throw percentage at .933, 14-15 while Alexis Kaufusi is tops in the field goal percentage category at .537, 22-41.

-- BYU head coach Jeff Judkins has compiled a 185-102 record as of Dec. 6 and is 15 wins away from picking up his 200th career victory.

-- With the 32 points scored at the Hukilau Invitational on Dec. 3-4, senior guard Mindy Bonham has tallied 980 points and is 20 points from reaching BYU’s 1,000-point club.

Team Captains Selected

Mindy Bonham and Haley Hall have been chosen by their teammates as co-captians for the 2010-11 season. This is Hall’s third straight co-captain selection.

Player Updates/Injuries

Freshmen Morgan Bailey and Stephanie Rovetti will redshirt the 2010-11 season.

Dayna Burgess is not expected to play in the upcoming games due to a knee injury.

ABOUT UPCOMING OPPONENTS

UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY

The Wolverines have a 1-6 record with their lone win, a 90-46 rout over Northern New Mexico on Nov. 27. This season’s squad returns eight letterwinners and two starters from a team that compiled a 10-22 overall record and finished first at the Great West Conference tournament. Sammie Jensen, a 6-0 sophomore forward leads the team in scoring and in rebounding with 12.7 points and 7.9 boards per game. In the assists category, junior guard Abbie Beutler has dished out a total of 33, while freshman Whitney Jenkins has the most steals on the team with eight to date. Former Cougar Cathy Nixon has been at the helm of UVU’s women’s basketball team for 16 years.

WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY

Weber State University comes to the Marriott Center with a 2-3 record. They host Montana-Western on Wed. Dec. 8 before making the trip south to Provo. The Wildcats finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 9-20, 3-13 record and return two starters and eight letterwinners. Two players are currently scoring in double figures for the squad led by Amanda Hughes’s 12.2 points and a team high 6.0 rebounds per game. Megan Patterson follows with 10.6 points and 2.8 boards a contest. Leading the way in assists is Caela Mohre with 15 to date while Mariah Metoyer has the most steals on the team with a total of seven on the year. Head coach Carla Taylor is in her 22nd season leading the women’s basketball program at Weber State where she’s compiled a 301-320 record.

What’s Next

The Cougars have two more home games in the month of December. They host Portland State on Dec. 18 and Montana State on Dec. 30. BYU will finish its nonconference schedule playing at Gonzaga on Dec. 21 and at Nevada on Jan. 1.
