No. 2 Seed BYU awaits Semifinal Opponent

With a (20-8, 11-5) record and a second place finish in the 2010 MWC regular season, BYU’s women’s basketball team prepares for the MWC Championships.

As the No. 2 seed, the Cougars get a bye into the semifinals of the MWC tournament and will play Fri. Mar. 12 at 2:30 p.m. PT. at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Their opponent could be Wyoming or San Diego State. During the MWC campaign, BYU split the series with Wyoming and San Diego State.

BYU HISTORY IN MWC CHAMPIONSHIP

-- The Cougar women have advanced to the championship game in six of the 10 years of the conference tournaments. BYU won the title in 2002 defeating UNLV 61-46 at the Thomas & Mack Center. That same year, the team went on to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.

-- BYU has never entered the MWC Championships lower than the six seed.

-- During last year’s MWC tournament in Las Vegas, the Cougars entered the tournament as the No.6 seed after being tied with Wyoming for fifth place in the MWC regular season. But, because of tie-breaker procedures they were the No. 6 seed. The Cougars fell to UNLV 58-66 in the first round.

BYU AND WYOMING IN MWC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

The Cougars and Cowgirls have only met once in the league tournament. The first round matchup was on Mar. 6, 2002 with BYU getting the 82-69 win at the Thomas & Mack Center.

WYOMING - The team finished the 2010 MWC season tied with New Mexico for fifth place with a 9-7 league record. Three Cowgirls are scoring in double digits led by junior forward Hillary Carlson who scores 15.1 points a game and grabs 6.4 boards. She’s followed by Aubrey Vandiver who contributes 14.1 points and grabs a team high 9.9 boards per contest. Rounding out the double figure scoring is sophomore forward Emma Langford’s 11.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. She also has the most assists on the team with a total of 90 while Vandiver tops the list in the steals category with a total of 46 to date. Head coach Joe Legerski is in his seventh year with the Wyoming program.

BYU AND SDSU IN MWC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

The Cougars and Aztecs have compiled a 1-0 record in the conference tournament. The two schools only meeting in the league championships was during the 2000 campaign. On Mar. 8, BYU picked up the 78-37 win in first round action from the Thomas & Mack Center.

SAN DIEGO STATE -

The team finished the 2010 MWC race tied with Utah for third place with a 10-6 record. Currently, three players are scoring in double digits for SDSU led by seniors Jene Morris and Quenese Davis. Morris tops the list with 16.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while Davis contributes 12.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and a team high 5.3 assists per contest. Junior center Paris Johnson rounds out the double figure scoring with 11.5 points and 6.4 boards. Jessika Bradley leads the way in rebounds grabbing 6.5 boards per game with Morris having the most steals on the team with 82. Head coach Beth Burns is in her 13th season with the Aztecs women’s basketball program.
