PROVO -- Thanks to a 19-0 run in the first half, the BYU women’s basketball team defeated Colorado State 72-54 on Wednesday night in the Marriott Center. With the win the Cougars improve to 17-6 on the season and 8-3 in Mountain West Conference play.

“I thought we played some of our best basketball tonight,” said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. “I’ve got to give Colorado State a lot of credit, getting down and fighting back. You saw how our team can play when they click.”

Coriann Wood led all scorers with 18 points. Other Cougars scoring in double figures were Mindy Nielson Bonham and Kristen Riley with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Riley also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Bonham started things off for the Cougars with an early three-pointer and running layup. Keilani Moeaki hit a trey with 17:27 to play to give BYU a four-point lead, but the Rams made two consecutive baskets to tie the score at 8-8.

Again tied at 11-11 after trading three-pointers, the Cougars put together a 19-point run, during which the defense held CSU scoreless for seven minutes. During that stretch Alexis Kaufusi scored six points, including a converted three-point play. Jazmine Foreman recorded a fast-break layup with to put BYU up 26-11, while Riley hit a jumper with 7:57 to play in the half.

“This team has to realize that they’re very good when they do things together,” said Judkins. “When they do that they’re fun to watch.”

Bonham, Dani Peterson and Haley Hall all knocked down jumpers for the Cougars as the Rams managed to pull within 11 points heading into the halftime break.

The second half started with an 11-0 by BYU run, sparked by back-to-back makes from Moeaki. Wood hit a three-pointer with 16:04 to play, followed by consecutive baskets from Riley. The Rams scored their first points of the half on a pair of free throws made with 14:36 to play in the game.

Leading 52-38, Bonham knocked down her second trey of the night, but CSU recorded two of its own as it cut the deficit to 10 points with just under five minutes on the clock. The Rams came within eight points before Wood and Hall scored back-to-back three-point shots. On BYU’s next possession, Hall drove to the basket for a score with 1:16 remaining on the game clock.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday for at matchup against Wyoming at 2 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on BYU-TV.
