Team Battles at SUU, then Hosts Kansas State

With a 2-1 record the BYU women’s basketball team rounds out a three-game road trip in Cedar City where they will go up against instate rival Southern Utah (0-3), on Tues. Nov. 24. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. The day after Thanksgiving they host Kansas State (1-2) at 3:30 p.m.

Team Highlights (2009-10)

-- Head Coach Jeff Judkins improved to 8-1 in home openers with the 73-51 victory over Utah Valley University on Nov. 13.

-- In the win over UVU, the Cougars were up by 33 points halfway through the second half of the contest.

-- As in last year’s season, the depth of the BYU team showed in the win over the Wolverines, as 30 of the team’s points were scored by the Cougar bench.

-- The team was able to score a total of 28 points in the paint vs. UVU.

-- Despite losing by one 66-67 to the University of Washington on 11/18/09, the BYU bench outscored the Huskies bench by eight, 24-16.

-- The Cougars have had four players score in double figures in all three games played to date

-- Even though the team suffered a disappointing one point loss to the Washington Huskies on 11/18/09,they shot at least 50 percent or better in all categories (50.0) from the field, (55.6) from three-point range, and (53.8) from the free throw line

-- The 50 rebounds BYU had in the win at Montana State on 11/20/09 tie for 10th place in the team’s all-time records for boards per game

-- For the second straight time the team has shot above .500 from three point range, at Montana State on 11/20/09 they shot (57.1) percent

This Week’s Cougar Opponents

Southern Utah University - Tues. Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. (Cedar City, UT) - Centrum Arena

After three games played so far this season, the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah have compiled a 0-3 record, playing once at home and twice on the road. SUU returns four starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s team that went 9-20. The team is under the helm of J.R. Payne who’s in her first season with the Thunderbirds. On this year’s roster two players are scoring in double figures in the early season with 10.3 points each from Chanel Thorley and Challis Pascucci. The latter also tops the leader board in the rebound category grabbing 10.3 per game. In assists it’s sophomore guard Cassie Burgess who has dished out a team high 10 assists to date.

Kansas State University - Fri. Nov. 27 at 3:30 p.m. (Provo, UT) - Marriott Center

The Kansas State Wildcats are making their first ever appearance in the Marriott Center. To date they’ve compiled a 1-2 record with their first win over Washington State on Nov. 20. They play at Creighton on Mon. Nov. 23 before making the trip to Provo. Two players are scoring in double figures for the Wildcats led by the 21.7 points from junior forward Ashley Sweat who also leads the way in rebounds grabbing an average of 9.3 per game. She’s followed by Kari Kincaid who scores 13.3 points a game. Head coach Deb Patterson is in her 14th season at the helm of the women’s basketball program where she’s compiled a 265-146 record heading into the 2009-10 campaign.

What’s Next

BYU start the month of December on the road playing in the Hukilau Tournament in Laie, HI. On Dec. 4 the Cougars take on the University of San Francisco and then battle the University of Hawaii on Dec. 5. Both games tip off at 1 p.m. (Hawaii time)
