Cougars Defeat Ducks with Ease
PROVO -- A strong first half accompanied by solid defense throughout the game allowed the BYU women’s basketball team to earn a 67-45 victory over the visiting Oregon Ducks from the Pac-10, Friday.
Shawnee Slade led BYU with a season-high 17 points by going 8-for 12 from the field, with Sarah Red-Hostetter finishing with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, a career high. Cassie King also played a solid game by playing physically inside and scoring eight points.
“Shawnee and Sarah played well for us today,” head coach Jeff Judkins said. “I challenged Cassie to play more physical inside and she took it to heart and played well. I also thought Jenteal Jackson did a nice job and made big plays for us.”
Mindy Nielson and Coriann Wood contributed seven and six points, respectively. The Cougars ended the game shooting 43 percent (29-for-67) overall after going 48 percent in the first half.
The Ducks’ 31 percent shooting in the first half dipped to 20 percent in the second half on 13-of-52 shooting, averaging 25 percent overall. Amanda Johnson and Ellie Manou led Oregon with 10 points apiece with Micaela Cocks and Victoria Kenyon finishing with seven and six points, respectively.
The Cougars got off to a slow start, going just 14 percent on 1-for-7 shooting but Mindy Nielson's first bucket of the game got the team out of the slump.
Sarah Red-Hostetter then picked things up by making a trey and two layups driving into the lane. Coriann Wood also made a three, putting the Cougars up 15-10 halfway through the opening half.
Multiple Cougars saw action as Jenteal Jackson, Cassie King, Shawnee Slade and Nielsen scored points to get the team rolling with a 23-14 lead. Oregon’s Manou and Kenyon kept the Ducks close, scoring nine points on 3-of-6 shooting and 3-4 from the free-throw line.
King and Slade combined to score the final eight points of the first half as the team built a 38-24 halftime lead. The Cougars finished the half with 17-of-35 shooting. Slade accounted for 10 points, with Hostetter, King and Wood rounding up the leading scorers for the half.
The second half proved to be more defensive as both teams committed several turnovers. Nielson made a big trey to increase the lead to 55-37 and forcing a Duck timeout. Slade, King and Hostetter helped the team to a 20-point lead with five minutes remaining in the game as Oregon was unable to slow the Cougar momentum.
Freshman Dani Peterson and junior Jaime Judkins scored the final six points for the Cougars. Defensively, King set the tone by leading the team with three blocks.
The Cougars are 2-0 this season when leading at halftime and Coach Judkins is now 7-1 in home openers.
“It was a nice win for us,” Judkins said. “We showed a lot of inside strength and played good defense holding them to 25 percent. More importantly, we kept trying, which is something we didn’t do all the time last year.”
BYU returns home Tuesday night hosting Connecticut, the nation's no.1 ranked women's basketball team. It will be the first time UConn has being in Provo and the highest ranked team BYU has ever played. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
The game with the Huskies is being promoted as "Pack the House" night with admission for adults at just $1, and children are free. Numerous prizes and contests are planned throughout the evening.
