PROVO -- In a hard-fought game against New Mexico the BYU women's basketball team came up short, 45-55, Tuesday night in the Marriott Center.

Senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling topped the Cougars scoring 18 points on the night. She now has 65 double-figure games in her career. Freshman Sarah Red's seven points ties a career and season high. The Cougars only had 16 turnovers against the Lobos, which is the fourth lowest this season.

"We didn't want it bad enough tonight," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "We didn't play well offensively and missed a lot of open shots that we should've had. We just did not execute tonight."

Sinking the first basket the Cougars took a quick lead, but the Lobos stayed close behind. With a three pointer, New Mexico tied the game 10-10 at 11:31 and then took the lead scoring two more baskets. The Cougars responded with Red making a three-point shot of her own. At 4:21 BYU tied the game 19-19 with a basket by senior Ashley Chessman.

A nearly four minute drought by both teams left the game tied until the last seconds of the half when freshman Mindy Nielson secured a three-point lead dropping an and-1 basket with two seconds left on the clock. BYU topped New Mexico 22-19 at the buzzard.

The Cougars have held opponents to under 20 first-half points four times this season in games against Seton Hall (14), twice against Colorado State (16,14), and now against New Mexico (19).

The Lobos closed the gap scoring the first basket of the second half, but senior Lauren Riley-Varley answered with an assist by Nielson, making it a 24-21 game. New Mexico responded with a three-point basket at 15:34 tying the score. BYU took the lead again with a three pointer of its own, by Gillespie-Carling. The Lobos stayed close behind the Cougars until 11:34 when New Mexico dropped another three-point basket to tie the game 33-33.

Gaining momentum New Mexico pulled away scoring the next nine of 11 points, leading BYU 43-35 at 6:40. The Cougars answered with two baskets including a three-point shot by Gillespie-Carling, closing the deficit 40-43 with four minutes left in the game. The Cougars could not keep up with the Lobos falling 10 points short as the clock ran out.

BYU leads the series against New Mexico 38-23. The last time the Cougars swept the season series was 1994 when both teams were in the Western Athletic Conference. For the second year in a row neither team has won on its home court.

The Cougars will next go head-to-head with Air Force Academy as they travel to face the Falcons on Saturday at 2 p.m.
