PROVO -- No. 24 ranked BYU came out with guns blazing in its first of two exhibition games easily beating Westminster College 78-33, Wednesday.

Senior Melinda Johnsen came out shooting a perfect two for two from beyond the arc finishing with 13 points to lead all scores. Johnsen played only 16 minutes and was just four points shy of Westminster's total first half points.

It was all BYU as they ran out to a 25-6 lead with about 12 minutes left in the first half and never looked back. They finished the half with 47 points.

"It was nice to have the lights, the referee's and the scoreboard, especially for our younger players," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "The returning players were a lot more relaxed."

The Cougars played hard against the smaller Griffins, and came up big on defense. Johnsen also tallied a team high three steals, one of which led to a lay-up and a free throw. Jenny Keele and Cassie King each had two blocks. Four other Cougars got in on the action with blocks one of which was on an attempted reverse by Westminster's Elisa Leader. SDSU transfer Ashley Cheesman came from behind to knock the shot out of bounds.

"We've only practiced two and a half weeks," Judkins said. "They've never seen this offense before and they defended it well."

Center Dani Kubik Wright scored 12 points and had four rebounds while junior center Lauren Riley and Cheesman each grabbed team high six rebounds apiece.

Janae Hirschi led the Griffins with 11 points and five rebounds.

The Cougars shot 46 percent from the field and 89 percent from the line.

On Friday BYU plays Dixie State College at 7 p.m., before hosting Idaho State on Nov. 10 in the Preseason WNIT. That game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
