Cougars Fall to Lobos 52-58

PROVO -- BYU (10-7, 0-3) still looks to pick up their first Mountain West Conference win as they fell to the University of New Mexico (10-5, 2-0) 52-58 at the Marriott Center on Thursday night.

"We knew we were going to get zoned, and spent a lot of time on it this week," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "We didn't make shots and gave them a lot of second opportunity baskets."

The Cougars struggled with the Lobos' defensive zone, shooting 2-for-22 from behind the 3-point arc at 9.1 percent. BYU also struggled to control the boards as New Mexico out rebounded them 50 to 30.

BYU sophomore Ambrosia Anderson led the team with 13 points and three steals, while teammates Julie Sullivan and Danielle Chessman each contributed eight points and combined for nine rebounds. Sullivan also dished out four assists.

The Cougars came out strong to start the game with an 8-0 run. New Mexico responded with a 12-0 run to take the lead with 8:48 remaining in the first half. With 2:20 remaining in the half, Anderson hit two free-throws to bring the Cougars within four points but, the Lobos went into half-time with a nine point lead (18-27).

Both teams came out strong in the second half, but BYU was unable to regain the lead. Lobos senior Melissa Forest led her team in rebounds with seven, while junior Mandi Moore led the scoring with 17 points.

BYU rallied in the final seconds of the game when Kali Taylor and Anderson hit two big 3-pointers to bring the team within three points with 23 seconds left in the game. BYU was forced to foul in order to stop the clock and New Mexico responded going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

The last time BYU lost at home to New Mexico was on February 16, 2003 (64-71). It is their sixth game they have lost this season by seven or less points.

BYU looks to improve their MWC standing when they take on Air Force on Saturday at 4pm in the Marriott Center. The game will be tape delayed on BYU radio.
