Cheesman Scores Big in Victory Over Montana State

Bozeman, MT (Jan. 6, 2004) Danielle Cheesman's strong double double performance with 20 points and 13 rebounds sparked BYU's women's basketball team to a 67-55 road win over Montana State, Tuesday.

The win improves the Cougars' record to 8-4 on the season while Montana State falls to 7-5 overall.

Chessman had just eight points in the first half of action, but came back strong in the second half tying her biggest point output of the year. She also grabbed a game-high 13 boards.

"Danielle played the best game of her life tonight," said coach Jeff Judkins. "And this is a very good road win for us, they (Montana State) are a very good, one of the better team's we've played all year."

Judkins also credited the team's defense in the victory. "This was a nice win for us. We played well, took care of the ball and played great defense," added the coach.

Two back -to-back three point buckets by starters Jennie Overdiek and Kali Taylor gave the Cougars a 10-2 lead in the early minutes of the game. At the break they were up by nine, 33-24.

In the second half, BYU continued to take control of the game, leading by as many as 19 points with 11 minutes left in the contest. Montana State slowly battled back to give the Cougars a scare when they cut the lead to 10, 60-50 with 4:51 remaining. That was as close as they would get as Ambrosia Anderson hit a three-pointer on BYU's next possession for a 63-50 lead to eventually seal the 12-point victory.

Taylor, and Anderson contributed with 10 points a piece in the game. For Montana State, Kati Burrows led her team's effort with 16 points followed by 12 from Hillary Scott.

BYU shot an impressive 93 percent from the foul line, while the Bobcats only converted on 11 of 23 from the free-throw line.

The Cougar women remain on the road to face two more Big Sky Conference opponents this week, playing at Northern Arizona on Thursday night and at Portland State on Saturday afternoon.
