Career Points by Sullivan Lifts Cougars Over Santa Clara

Santa Clara, CA (Dec. 4, 2003) Behind the efforts of Julie Sullivan's career setting 20- point performance, the Cougar women clinched a 75-63 win over Santa Clara, Thursday.

Sullivan scored the 20 points in 25 minutes of playing coming off the bench. She also made critical free throw in the final minutes, finishing with 12 of 16 to clinch the BYU victory. The 12-point win puts the team's record at 4-2, while the Broncos fall to 2-3.

Despite an early lead for the visiting Cougar team, hosts Santa Clara battled back for a five-point, 19-14 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first half. They went up by as much as 19 points before Nancy Seljaas put in a couple of threes to cut the Bronco lead to 10, 36-26 at the break.

"We played well defensively in the second half," said coach Jeff Judkins. "This was a total team effort tonight, we had a great comeback and we stuck together as a team."

Coach Judkins was also pleased with his team's rebounding effort with three players in double figures. "I don't think that's ever been done by a BYU team before and that's a credit to how well we played," added Judkins.

Ambrosia Anderson grabbed a game-high 12 boards followed by 11 for Ashley Chamberlain and 10 for Danielle Cheesman who also scored 13 points. The Cougars finished the night out rebounding the Broncos by five 51 to 46. Kali Taylor had a season high 13 points with nine coming from behind the arc.

Four Santa Clara players scored in double figures with Quinn Thomas coming off the bench with 13 points. Another bench player, Ashley Gonnerman followed with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Ashley Graham and Whitney Sutak chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively.

More road games continue for BYU next week, playing at CS Fullerton on Dec. 9 and at Arizona on Dec. 12.
