Colorado Overwhelms BYU

BOULDER -- All-American Erin Thorn finished her memorable career at BYU with a 45-84 loss to Colorado in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars (19-11) were no match for the stampeding Buffalos (22-7), who cruised by shooting 60 percent (12-20) from behind the arc and 50 percent (25-50) from the field. BYU had a difficult time making baskets, shooting 28 percent (17-61) from the field. Colorado out rebounded BYU on the night, 39-33.

"It was one of those nights when everything we tried went wrong, and everything they tried went right," Head Coach Jeff Judkins said.

Colorado came out in the second half unconscious, going 3-for-3 from three-point land and 5-for-5 shooting, leaving BYU behind on the scoreboard, 21-56. Kate Fagan led Colorado with 21 points (6-for-10 from 3-point range) and Tera Bjorklund had a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

The leading scorer for BYU was Thorn with 10 points, all of which came in the first half. Thorn was the only BYU player to score in double figures.

Thorn hit a three-pointer with four minutes remaining in the first half to extend her consecutive games with a made three-pointer to 39 games. The last time Thorn failed to make a three-pointer in a game was last season against Utah on Feb. 23.

Four minutes passed in the game before Thorn put BYU on the scoreboard with a jumper. The Cougars were outscored 10-26 in the first 10 minutes of the game. Colorado continued to extend its lead, making the score at the end of the first half, 18-43.

BYU came back from a 26-point deficit against UNLV earlier this season to lose by four, but Colorado had no intention of allowing BYU to form a come back.

"I'm very proud of the way our season has gone," Judkins said.
