Player and Team Season Highs Lift Cougars Over Falcons

PROVO, Utah (Feb. 8, 2003) Ashleigh Chamberlain's season highs in points along with season high points from Nancy Seljaas contributed to the Cougars' 89-50 victory over the Falcons, Saturday.

The record-breaking team performance included a season high in points, (89) and in three-pointers in a game with 15. With the win, the BYU women improved to 5-2 in MWC play, 14-6 overall. The Air Force Falcons fell to 7-13, 1-6 on the year.

All-American Erin Thorn led the BYU effort with 22 points, including six three pointers. Three other Cougars also scored in double figures with the season-high 13 from Seljaas who came off the bench, playing 16 minutes. Starting sophomore forward Danielle Cheesman had 11 points while Chamberlain tallying a season-high 10 points and six rebounds. BYU shot 49 percent from the field, 83 from the free throw line and 58 percent from the three-point arc.

It was all BYU from the start as the home team got off to a quick 11-6 lead and never looked back, taking a comfortable 26-point (44-18) cushion at the break. And in the second half of league play, Cougar fans saw more of the same as the home team kept up its intensity and extended its lead by as much as 46 points, 82-36 with just over six minutes left.

The lopsided victory provided some playing time for the entire Cougar roster. "It was nice to get a lot of players in the game," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "This will give them good experience and confidence. Nancy Seljaas played a great game and we were even able to give her playing time in the first half," added Judkins.

For the Air Force Academy, junior forward Shawna Neff had a career-high performance with a game-high 24 points and five rebounds. The Falcons finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line.

Mountain West Conference action continues for the Cougar women next week. The team travels to Laramie to take on the Cowgirls on Thurs., Feb. 13 and at Ft. Collins against CSU on Sat., Feb. 15. That game can be seen live on ESPN2 at 3 p.m.
