BYU Loses to In-State Rival Utah at Home

Provo, Utah (February 1, 2003)--The Cougars home winning streak came to end with a 67-50 loss to Utah on Saturday. BYU record is now 12-6 on the season and 3-2 in conference play, while Utah improve to 15-3, 5-0.

Head coach Jeff Judkins said, "Utah out played us today. They made the big plays when they had to."

With four minutes remaining in the first half, BYU went cold and gave up a 20-14 lead on a 8-0 Utah run led by freshman Kim Smith, who ended with a game high 19 points. Utah continued to extend its lead in the second half by shooting 65 percent from the floor and 5-8 from behind the arc.

Without the play of all-conference senior forward Jennifer Leitner, who was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, caused the team problems and left the team shorthanded, Judkins said.

Sophomore forward Danielle Cheesman said the loss of Leitner caused the team to become more united, "Players have had to step up to different challenges throughout the year, this was just another obstacle for us."

Cheesman contributed the team high 17 points followed by All-American Erin Thorn who scored 13 points with a game high seven assists. Freshman guard Jen Overdiek came off the bench to give the team 30 minutes of play and pulled down a career high seven rebounds.

The Cougars finished the game with a 35 percent field goal percentage, while the Utes shot 50 percent.

BYU hosts conference opponents New Mexico on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Air Force on Saturday at 1 p.m.
