Cheesman Lifts Cougars Over Wolfpack

Raleigh, N.C. (Dec.14, 2002) Danielle Cheesman's career high 20 points propels BYU's 22nd ranked women's basketball team to an impressive 11-point road win over North Carolina State, Saturday.

Despite playing the final minutes of the game with four fouls, Cheesman finished strong with seven of the last eleven points. The game was tied 47-47 with just over six minutes left when both Cheesman and point guard Julie Sullivan made some critical shots and free-throws to seal the Cougar victory.

The Cougars took an 11-point lead at the break that they saw the Wolfpack slowly dwindle to a tie at the 6:14 mark. But the team stayed focused, kept up their defensive pressure and finally won the game at the free-throw line, scoring their final nine points from the charity stripe. Prior to that, the team had only gone to the line once when Danielle Cheesman missed the first of a one and one with 4:30 left in the first half.

"Both Julie and Danielle had great games for us tonight, they stepped it up when we needed them to," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "We made some good plays and had more of a team concept in today's game and I think the team realized that they have to play together in order to win," he commented after the win.

All-American Erin Thorn led all scored with 21 points and eight rebounds, followed by Cheesman's career high 20 points and four rebounds. Sullivan's contribution included 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

For North Carolina State it was Kaayla Chones with 14 points and a team high five rebounds with teammate Carisse Moody tallying 10 points and four rebounds. The Wolfpack shot 31 percent from the field and 55 percent from the line.

BYU ended its long stretch of road games shooting 46 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free-throw line and outrebounded NC State 46 to 34.

There's still one more game on the schedule for the road weary Cougar women. Next week the team participates in the Triple Crown hosted by New Mexico, Saturday, Dec. 21. BYU now 6-2 on the season will battle the University of Alabama, while the Lobos take on Louisiana Tech. Tip off for the BYU game is set for 12 p.m., in a live ESPN2 broadcast.
