Young Players Get Playing Time In Exhibition Win Over Westminster College

Provo, UT -- Nearly every player on the Cougar women's basketball team got a chance to play in the second of two exhibitions games, as the BYU squad easily defeated Westminster College 75-51, Tuesday.

Both instate schools kept it close in the early minutes of the game, but the Cougars took control of the game at the 5:56 mark with baskets from starters Jennifer Leitner, Erin Thorn and Julie Sullivan that gave BYU a 10-point 28-18 lead. The Cougars never looked back enjoying a 40-23 advantage at the break.

It was more of the same in the second half of action with BYU coming out scoring often and extending their lead by as much as 27 points, 58-31 with just under 12 minutes to go in the game.

Head Coach Jeff Judkins took out his starters 10 minutes into the second half, giving his younger players an opportunity to get some playing time.

"I think we have a long way to go. We have a lot of new players and we need to learn to play together as a team and with confidence," he said.

"I was pleased with the way Brittany Larson, Kali Taylor and Julie Sullivan played as well as the rest of our starting line up. The season is still very early and we will get a big test this Friday to see just where we are," commented coach Judkins after the exhibition game.

Senior All-American Erin Thorn was the lone BYU player in double digits with 17 points. Teammate Lisa Hansen followed with her eight points.

For the visiting Westminster team it was all Rebekah Steenblink who led all scores with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Terry contributed six points in the game.

The Cougar women officially open the season this Friday night hosting the University of Texas. The Longhorns from Austin are ranked 11th in the country. Tip off is set for 7 p.m., and will air live locally on KBYU Channel 11 and on BYU-TV on the Dish Network or Direct TV.
