BYU Dominates National Women's Basketball League Team in Preseason Game
PROVO -- The BYU women's basketball team wrapped up its preseason with a 77-57 thrashing of the National Women's Basketball League Team Elite Saturday night at the Marriott Center.
Senior co-captain Jill Adams led the Cougars with a double-double in the win. Adams was on fire in the first half, scoring 14 points. Adams finished with 21 in the game to couple 11 rebounds. Junior April Hayes, starting in place of injured forward Lori Cuff, added 13 points.
Guards Stacy Jensen and Erin Thorn contributed 10 points each as well. Thorn, the preseason selection for 1999 NCAA Freshman of the Year, also chalked up eight assists in her second outing as a Cougar.
Forward Kina Brown was the leading scorer for the NBWL team, finishing with 18 points, while forward Loyola Moore pulled down 10 boards.
BYU jumped out to a 40-29 halftime lead, sinking six of 13 three-point shots. In the second half, the Cougars were the beneficiaries of several foul calls and converted on 13 of 15 free throw attempts.
"We played with a lot more confidence tonight and made a lot of adjustments we needed to make," BYU head coach Trent Shippen said. "We started better and shot the ball better, especially from the perimeter."
The Cougars open their official 1999-2000 season at home next Saturday against Oklahoma City at 4:30 p.m.
