Cougars Win Final Home Game

PROVO -- On senior night, the BYU women's basketball team won its final home game of the season, defeating Air Force 66-42 Saturday night at the Marriott Center.

Despite a slow start, the Cougars took a 36-20 halftime lead and never looked back. Pacing BYU was the backcourt tandem of sophomore All-American Erin Thorn and junior point guard Stacy Jensen. Thorn led the team with 16 points, including four three pointers while Jensen had 12 points and five assists. Seniors Caroline Beus and Kaly Shippen, playing the final home game of their career had eight points a piece while senior Jorja Cox chipped in two. The Cougars shot 43.6 percent from the field and committed only 13 turnovers compared to 20 assists. The Falcons shot 29.6 percent from the field and had 20 turnovers resulting in 31 BYU points.

"We started out a little flat but picked it up and did a good job taking care of the ball," BYU coach Trent Shippen said. "We kept executing and played a good game."

Air Force was led by freshman guard Amoy Jackson, who scored 11 points while freshman Shawna Neff chipped in eight. The Cougars made 10 three pointers, shooting 47.6 percent for the game while the Falcons made four three pointers, shooting only 18.2 percent from behind the arc.

With the win, the Cougars finish the regular season with a 16-11 (8-6) record and in a third-place tie with New Mexico and UNLV. Air Force drops to 3-24 (0-14) on the year. The Mountain West Conference Tournament will be Wednesday through Saturday in Las Vegas. Due to a coin toss, BYU got the #4 seed and will open against UNLV, Wednesday at 6 p.m. (PST).
