Conference Tourney Ahead, Cougars 4th Seed, Play UNLV

BYU's women's basketball team finished the regular MWC season tied for third place with New Mexico and UNLV. In Saturday night's coin toss tie breaker, the Lobos were the beneficiaries getting the third place slot. BYU dropped to the number four seed and UNLV finished fifth because they were swept by second place CSU. In Wednesday's quarterfinal game, it will be BYU (16-11, 8-6) vs UNLV (18-8, 8-6) in a 6 p.m. (PST) tip off.

Last Game Recap

The Cougars finished the regular conference season with a 8-6 record after defeating the Air Force Academy 66-42 Saturday night. Because it was the final home game of the year, the team honored its three graduating seniors, #4 Kaly Shippen, #15 Jorja Cox and #44 Caroline Beus. In the game, Erin Thorn led the way with 16 points and three rebounds. Stacy Jensen followed with 12 points and five assists. Julie Whetten led the team in the assist category with eight and Beus toped the least in rebounds, grabbing six in the contest.

Scouting UNLV

The Lady Rebels, who are hosting this year's MWC championships are seeded fifth after an 8-6 conference record. During the regular season meeting between BYU and UNLV each team won on its home court. At the Thomas & Mack Center the score was 61-50 and at the Marriott Center the final was 89-83. Linda Frohlich leads the Rebels in scoring with an average of 19.6 points and 9.4 rebounds. Two teammates join her in double digit scoring. Constance Jinks is getting 14.0 points a game and Petra Glaser picks up 11.2 points a game. UNLV is scoring 68.8 points and shooting 45 percent from the field and 70 percent at the free-throw line.

BYU and the 1999-2000 MWC Tourney - A Look Back

The Cougars came into the 1999-2000 inaugural McLeod MWC Women's Basketball as the number two seed with a 10-4 record. BYU advanced to the title game after a decisive 78-37 victory over SDSU and a 77-69 win over CSU (the only team BYU had not beaten in conference play that season). In the championship game, Utah ended BYU's six-game winning streak, the longest of the season, with a 47-61 victory over the Cougars to capture the conference title. Lori Cuff and Erin Thorn earned All-Tournament team honors.

Shippen Quotes

On BYU team: It is nice to have a win going into the tournament. Hopefully, it gives us some momentum and confidence. I knew that this season's conference schedule was going to be a tough battle all the way through and that's exactly what happened with three of us being tied for third place.

On UNLV: They are a tough first round opponent who play extremely tough on their home court. We have had good matchups with them this season and our first game will not be an easy one. We just need to focus on taking it one game at a time and playing our best basketball.

Head Coach Trent Shippen

Trent Shippen enters his fourth season at the helm of BYU's women's basketball program. The 22 wins last year are a first for the Cougar program since the 1992-93 season when BYU finished with a 24-5, 13-1 record and made its last NCAA Championships appearance.

This is Shippen's first Division I coaching assignment. Shippen came to BYU after a three year stint as head coach at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. While at Ricks, he led his 1995 team to a fifth place finish in the NJCAA Tournament, and was voted Region 18 Coach of the Year. He was also the recipient of the Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award at the 1995 NJCAA Tournament. He played college hoops at Ricks College and at Colorado State University. At Ricks he earned All-Region 18 Coach of the Year. He was also the recipient of the Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award at the 1995 NJCAA Tournament. He played college hoops at Ricks College and at Colorado State University. At Ricks he earned All-Region 18 honors as a sophomore and was a member of the 1983-84 Viking team that placed sixth at the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

During his career at CSU he helped the Rams place third in the NIT Tournament in 1988, where Shippen set the Madison Square Garden single-game record with six three-pointers. The following year he helped CSU win the league title, advance

to the second round of the NCAA tournament, was selected Academic All-WAC, and averaged 7.6 points and 2.9 assists.

Did You Know....Cougar Family Connections

Kaly Gillette Shippen (#04) is coach Shippen's sister-in-law. She married his younger brother Ty Shippen who walked on to this year's men's basketball team.

Chanell Rose (#23) is BYU's men's assistant basketball coach Dave Rose's daughter. She transferred from playing one year at neighboring Utah Valley State College.

As of Dec. 16, Utah transfer Trent Whiting became eligible to play on the men's team. His wife Amber who is a transfer from Weber State is part of the women's team. She'll be redshirting this season.

Up Next for the Cougars

If BYU beats UNLV in their quarterfinal game Wednesday, the Cougars would most likely play the Utes on Friday afternoon in a 2:30 p.m. PST tip off. That game between BYU and Utah would air locally in the state of Utah on a tape delay basis at 9 p.m. on the WB 30.
