Thorn Leads Cougs Over Wildcats

Ogden, UT (Dec. 1, 2001) Cougar All-American Erin Thorn led all scores with 22 points to give BYU's women's basketball team a 70-49 win over Weber State, Saturday.

The win improves the Cougars record to 4-2 on the year while the Wildcats fall to 3-3.

After only scoring six points in the first half, All-American Erin Thorn scored 17 un answered points to start the second half of play and give the visiting BYU team a nine-point 51-42 advantage with just over 10 minutes left in the game. The Cougars never looked back after that and led the Wildcats by as many as 20 points in the final minutes of the game.

"I was very pleased and happy with the way our team played this game tonight," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "When we play good team defense our offense seems to play well also and I thought that was key for us in the game."

BYU's Lisa Hansen, who came off the bench for her season high 10 points and six rebounds, was the only other Cougar in double figures.

For Weber State it was senior guard Stephanie Stanger with a team high 13 points, followed by the other guard on the team Karsen Muller with eight points and four rebounds.

Late in the first half of play, the Cougars down by six, 24-18 took advantage of a Wildcat shooting slump and went on a 8-0 run to take the first BYU lead of the game 26-24 with just three minutes left in the half.

The Cougars next game is on Dec. 8 against SMU in Dallas and will return to play in the Marriott Center on Wed., Dec. 12 against the University of Oregon. That game is set for a 4 p.m. tip off and is part of a double header with the men's team who host Ft. Lewis at 7 p.m.
