Cougars And Thorn Break Three-Point Records in Win Over Arkansas Pine-Bluff

Denver, CO (Dec. 14, 2001) All-American Erin Thorn broke her own school record in three-pointers in a game with nine as she led the BYU women's basketball team to an easy 90-50 victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Friday at this year's Pioneer Classic hosted by the University of Denver.

Thorn led all scores with 29 points going 10-15 from the field and 9-13 from behind the arc. The Cougar team also broke its own record in three pointers made in a game with 20 of 36. BYU's record was 15 treys in a game dating back to the 2000 season.

Melanie Pearson and Heather Cheesman came off the bench to give BYU more scoring power. Cheesman had a season high 14 points with Pearson contributing 12 in 14 minutes of playing time.

"I was really pleased with our game today, everyone played really hard," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "We're getting better and better with each game defensively and in this game our second team played very well as well and got some good minutes of playing time."

The Cougars enjoyed a comfortable 38-20 advantage at the half after Thorn scored the first 17 points for BYU for an early 17-2 lead.

Kenya Lockhart led the Arkansas Pine-Bluff team with 13 points and three rebounds followed by teammate Nikki Mooney who tallied 10 points and four defensive boards.

Despite the Cougars height advantage over the Lions, Arkansas Pine Bluff matched the BYU team on the boards finishing with 32 to the Cougars 33.

The BYU team will remain in Colorado and will meet the University of Denver, Saturday in a 4 p.m. tip off as part of the Pioneer Classic.
