Time Runs Out On Cougars In Upset Bid

Fort Collins, CO (Feb. 9, 2002) The BYU women's basketball team suffered its first conference loss in six games, falling 65-75 to Colorado State University.

It was a tale of two halves as CSU opened the game scoring on almost every possession to take a 42-27 halftime lead.

The Cougars came out strong in the second half, scoring nine points and holding CSU scoreless through the first 10 minutes of the second period to cut the Ram's lead to six.

CSU came alive after that and seemingly put the game out of reach by going on a 15-2 run over the next three minutes. BYU fought back and closed to within five with 1:10 left before foul trouble stalled their comeback.

In the end, BYU outscored the Rams 38-33 in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome the 15-point lead CSU held at halftime.

"We didn't start well and they really came ready to play today," said coach Jeff Judkins. "But I'm proud of them, we got in a hole early but we came back. We've played well this weekend."

BYU benefited from another balanced effort scoring as four Cougars reached double figures. All-American Erin Thorn led BYU with 17 points followed by Jennifer Leitner who scored 14 and led the team with 10 rebounds. Melanie Pearson came off the bench to score 13 points while Stacy Jensen added 12 points and four assists.

BYU shot 40 percent from the field but struggled from behind the arc and the free throw line.

With the loss, BYU falls to 15-7, 6-3 while CSU improves to 19-4, 8-1. The Cougars come home Thursday, Feb. 14 to face the Air Force Falcons at the Marriott Center. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
