Chessman Scores First Double-Double in Losing Effort Against New Mexico

PROVO -- In a battle for second place in the Mountain West Conference, the BYU women's basketball team fell short, losing 64-71 to the University of New Mexico. The loss drops the Cougars to 16-8, 7-4 while the Lobos improve to 19-6, 8-3.

"We seemed tired," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "In the first two minutes of the game I could see we were sluggish, we weren't moving. New Mexico came ready to play."

The bright spot for BYU was the play of freshman center/forward Danielle Cheesman who earned the first double-double of her collegiate career. Cheesman led the Cougars in points with 16 and rebounds with 12.

"Danielle played a good game," said Judkins. "She missed some shots but what I love about her is that she's not afraid to take them, she kept attacking. She's got a great future here."

Two other Cougars joined Cheesman in double figures. Melanie Pearson came off the bench to give BYU 15 points while All-American Erin Thorn, who played with a very bad cold, added 10 points and five assists. Jennifer Leitner contributed nine points and eight rebounds.

Led by junior center Jordan Adams' 18 points and 10 rebounds, three Lobos turned in double-doubles. Freshman Mandi Moore garnered 15 points and 10 rebounds while forward Chelsea Grear added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

BYU wraps up its home schedule by hosting in-state rival Utah at the Marriott Center on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tip off will be 4 p.m.
