Leitner's Double Double Leads Cougs Past Rebels

LAS VEGAS (Feb. 28, 2002) With her ninth double double of the season, Jennifer Leitner's 18 points and 12 rebounds lifted BYU's women's basketball team to a 64-48 victory over UNLV, Thursday in MWC action.

The Cougars improve to 18-8, 9-4 on the season and hold a solid third place finish in the MWC standings with just one more game to play. This was UNLV's first loss of the season as they fall to 21-5, 9-4. The Rebels are the fourth team that BYU has swept in conference action this year.

It was BYU's defense that made the difference in the game as the Cougars shut down MWC's leading scorer senior Linda Frohlich who had a season low eight points. BYU's strong defensive play by Lisa Osguthorpe and Jennifer Leitner caused major havoc for the UNLV offense, which only shot 23 percent from the field in the second half of play.

"This was one of our best defensive games of the year," said head coach Jeff Judkins.

"We played a great second half and I think the fact that we changed some things defensively made a huge difference for us. This is a great win for our program," added coach Judkins.

BYU enjoyed a 17-point 32-25 advantage at the break after going 14 of 30 from the field in the first 20 minutes of play. Senior transfer Melanie Pearson came off the bench for another impressive performance for the Cougars contributing 17 to the cause. All-American Erin Thorn chipped in 12 points and four rebounds. The Cougars finished the night shooting 50 percent from the field and putting in 9 of 10 from the foul line.

For UNLV it was guard ConstanceJinks leading her team with 15 points followed by Sherry McCracklin with 10. The Rebels finished the game shooting 32 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line.

The Cougars finish MWC action at San Diego State on Saturday night before returning to Las Vegas next Tuesday for the conference championships that begin on Mar. 6.
