BYU women’s basketball hosts San Francisco Thursday in final week of WCC action

PROVO, Utah— BYU women’s basketball (21-6, 13-3) hosts San Francisco  (6-21, 2-14) Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. MST, in the final week of West Coast Conference play.

ABOUT BYU

• After the 80-68 home victory over San Diego, the Cougars extended their win streak to four games where they sit in second place in the league standings. When playing at home, BYU has a 6-1 record in conference contests.
• BYU is 15-1 when leading at the half; is 19-3 when making at least 5 treys; is 12-2 when dishing out more assists; and is 11-1 when it pulls down more rebounds than its opponents.
• Freshman Shaylee Gonzales, who has scored in double-digits in 25 games, leads the team in scoring and assists with 16.4 and 4.2 averages, respectively. Sophomore Paisley Johnson contributes 14.4 points while junior Brenna Chase puts up 12.6 points a contest. Chase leads in steals (2.4 spg). Senior forward Jasmine Moody tops the leaderboard in rebounding, averaging 5.6 boards a game. Sophomore center Sara Hamson leads the team in blocks with a 2.4 average and is second in rebounding pulling down 5.5 boards a game.
• The Cougars are averaging 68.3 points and 38 rebounds a game. They are holding opponents to just 62.7 points per contest. BYU is shooting 42.4 percent from the field, 33.7 percent from behind the arc and 70.5 percent from the free-throw line.
• BYU ranks first in the WCC in blocked shots; is second in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and assists; is third in scoring margin, rebounding offense, assist/turnover ratio, defensive rebounds and 3-point field goals made; and is fourth in field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage defense and turnover margin.
• In the first meeting with the Dons this season on Dec. 31, the Cougars picked up a 67-59 victory in San Francisco. BYU leads the overall series 18-5. San Francisco is 1-9 when playing in the Marriott Center, winning on the Cougars home court last during the 2011-12 season, in a 71-64 victory for the Dons.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO

• The Dons have compiled a 6-21, 2-14 record on the year and are in ninth place in the final week of conference play. San Diego and Santa Clara are the only wins in league action for the Dons.
• The University of San Francisco is led in scoring and in rebounding by Shannon Powell who averages 16 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She also tops the leaderboard in assists (3.7 apg) and steals (2.1 spg). Lucija Kostic has the most blocks on the team with 21.
• USF is averaging 65.7 points and 35.4 rebounds a contest. The Dons shoot 43 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from behind the arc and 72.4 percent from the free-throw line.
