Atop the WCC, Cougar women play at San Diego Saturday

PROVO, Utah— BYU women’s basketball improved its record to 16-3, 8-0 on the year and is all alone in first place in this week’s West Coast Conference standings.

BYU vs. San Diego Game Notes

The Cougars travel to San Diego to take on the Toreros (8-11, 1-7) Saturday, January 26, at 2 p.m. PST. Fans can watch a live video stream of the league game on TheW.tv. Live stats are available at:https://byucougars.com/schedule/w-basketball/.

ABOUT BYU

  • The Cougars are riding a 10-game win streak and are at the top of the standings in the WCC race.
  • BYU received 32 votes in this week's  Associated Press Top 25 Poll. They are one spot out of the Top 25.
  • Currently, BYU is averaging 67.9 points per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 32.8 percent from the 3-point line and 69.1 percent when shooting from the free throw line. The team grabs 38.3 rebounds and has pulled down more boards in eight contests to date.
  • Freshman Shaylee Gonzales, who has scored in double-digits in all games, leads in scoring and in assists with a 17.3 and a 4.4 average. Sophomore Paisley Johnson contributes 14.1 points while teammate junior Brenna Chase puts up 12.6 points a contest.
  • Chase leads in steals (2.6 spg).  Senior forward Jasmine Moody tops the leaderboard in rebounding, averaging 5.6 boards a game. Sophomore center Sara Hamson leads in blocks with 1.8 per contest and ranks third in rebounding with a 5.1 average.
  • In the WCC, the Cougars rank second in scoring defense, scoring margin, field goal percentage defense, blocked shots, assist/turnover ratio and assists; third in turnover margin and 3-point field goals made; fourth in 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage defense and defensive rebounds.
  • During last year’s WCC race, San Diego swept the series with BYU including a 61-56 win over the Cougars in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Cougars have a 12-6 advantage in the series and have a 3-4 mark when playing at Jenny Craig Pavilion. BYU last won there on February 16, 2017, a 66-47 victory.
  • BYU and USD have two common nonconference opponents. Both teams played and lost to Southern Utah and Cal.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO

  • San Diego has compiled an 8-11, 1-7 record. In WCC action, the Toreros lone win is at Santa Clara where they beat the Broncos, 57-49 on Dec. 31.
  • Two players are putting up double-digit points for USD this year with a team-best 12.1 points from junior forward Patricia Brossmann. Another junior forward, Madison Pollock, follows in scoring with 10.8 points a contest. Brossmann also leads the way in rebounding with a 7.8 average. Sydney Shepard tops the list in assists with a 3.6 average.
  • San Diego is averaging 62.9 points and 39 rebounds a contest. The team shoots 40.4 percent from the field, 28.4 percent from 3-point range and 65.5 percent from the charity stripe.

UP NEXT FOR BYU
After the game in San Diego, the Cougar women continue league play on the road. BYU returns to Southern California for games at LMU and Pepperdine on January 31 and February 2, respectively.
