PROVO, Utah—With a 16-13, 11-7 record, BYU women’s basketball enters the 2018 West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Championships as the No. 3 seed. The Cougars finished the WCC regular-season race tied in third place with LMU but earned the third seed because they swept the series vs. the Lions.

In one of four quarterfinal games, the Cougar women take on No. 6 seed San Diego (15-14, 8-10) Thursday, March 1, at 6 p.m. PST at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. BYUtv will carry the game live with a radio simulcast on BYU Radio.

 ABOUT BYU

  • Leads the WCC in blocked shots and field goal percentage defense, is tied in second place in 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goal percentage, is second in  defensive rebounds and attendance, fourth in scoring defense and scoring margin, fifth in assists and steals.
  • Averages 66.9 points and 39.1 rebounds per game while shooting 41.1 percent from the field, 33.1 percent from the 3-point line and 67.0 percent from the free-throw line.
  • Nationally, BYU ranks fourth in blocked shots and fifth in blocked shots per game.
  • In the NCAA, senior guard Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee ranks sixth in free throws made, eighth in minutes played, 12th in free throw attempts and 42nd in points per game. In the WCC, she’s first in scoring and minutes played, fourth in free throw percentage and sixth in assists.
  • Freshman center Sara Hamson ranks second in blocked shots per game and blocked shots, nationally. In the WCC, she ranks first in blocked shots, sixth in rebounds and defensive rebounds and 10th in offensive rebounds.
  • In the WCC, sophomore guard Brenna Chase ranks first in 3-point field goals made, third in steals, seventh in minutes played and 11th in scoring.
  • In 21 games, BYU has tallied more blocks than its opponents.
  • It has recorded more assists in 13 games and pulled down more rebounds in 13 contests.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO

  • San Diego finished the WCC regular season in sixth place with an 8-10 mark.
  • The Toreros recorded league wins over San Francisco, LMU, Pepperdine, Santa Clara and swept the series with BYU and Portland.
  • USD averages 64.3 points and pulls down 36.9 rebounds per game. The team shoots 41.3 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from 3-point range and 70.2 percent from the free-throw line.
  • Head coach Cindy Fisher is in her 12th season at San Diego, where she has compiled a 251-165 record.

SERIES HISTORY

  • BYU leads the overall series against the Toreros, 12-5.
  • San Diego picked up both league wins in this year’s race, getting a one-point, 70-69 win in San Diego and a six-point, 66-60 victory in Provo.
  • On a neutral court, BYU has a 3-0 edge over USD.
  • Thursday’s game will be the second-straight time the two league foes have met in the quarterfinal round of the WCC championships. Last year, the Cougars won in overtime, 75-66 to advance to the semifinal round. In the 2012 WCC Championships, San Diego and BYU played in the semifinals with the Cougars advancing with a 64-46 victory.
