Deseret First Duel brings Utah to the Marriott Center in women’s hoops Saturday

BYU vs. Utah Game Notes

PROVO, Utah — With a 3-5 record to date, BYU women’s basketball is a home hosting its second-straight in-state team this Saturday. The Cougars battle the University of Utah (7-1) in the Deseret First Duel game at 2 p.m., on Dec. 9.

 

The game airs live on BYUtv, is simulcast on BYU Radio on Sirius XM-143 and can be seen online with a video stream on byutv.org.

 

ABOUT BYU


After playing in eight games so far this year, the Cougars have outrebounded six of their opponents. They were outrebounded by Eastern Washington and tied in total boards with Utah State on Thursday night.

 

BYU has scored at least 70 points in five of the eight games played and it has had at least two players finish with double-figure points in all games. Three recorded double figures in points in the loss over Utah State on Thursday. In the assists category, the Cougars have dished out more assists in four games, have had more blocks in three games and more steals in two contests to date.

 

BYU is shooting 42.4 percent from the field, 68.7 percent from the free throw line and 32.7 percent from behind the arc. It is averaging 69.4 points and grabbing 41.6 rebounds a game.

The Cougars are 2-2 on the season when playing at home. Last year they went 10-3 at home, including a perfect 9-0 mark in conference play.

This year’s team consists of two returning starters, six letterwinners and eight newcomers. BYU was picked to finish third in this year’s West Coast Conference race.

The Utes are the second of three Pac-12 opponents BYU will play this year. They were at Washington in November and will play at Cal on Dec. 16.

 

ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF UTAH


Utah has compiled a 7-1 record to date, last beating Pepperdine in Salt Lake City, 89-65.

The Utes are averaging 79.6 points while pulling down 41.9 rebounds a game. Utah is shooting 47.0 percent from the field, 76.0 percent from the charity stripe and 33.0 percent from 3-point range.

 

Utah returns eight letterwinners from last year’s roster including three starters. They were picked to finish ninth in the 2017-18 Pac-12 race.

SERIES HISTORY


Utah leads the overall series 63-42. When playing in Provo, the Utes are 22-20 and won last in Provo on Dec. 14, 2013, a double-overtime 82-74 victory. Head coach Jeff Judkins has a 14-17 record against Utah. In last year’s matchup in Salt Lake City, the Utes beat the Cougars 77-60 on Dec. 10.

BYU has one game on the road next week. They will be in northern California taking on Cal on Sat. , Dec. 16, at 5 p.m. PST. That game will be carried on BYU Radio.
