Cougar women break into top-25 of the Coaches Poll

PROVO, Utah (Feb. 23, 2016)—BYU women’s basketball (23-4, 15-1) is in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Coaches  Poll for the first time this year, coming in at No. 22.

The Cougars have been receiving votes in the  poll since January 19 when they were 14-4, 6-1 on the year. Last week, they were one spot out of the top 25.

This is the first time the team has been in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll since the 2013-14 season when they finished ranked 18^th after their impressive run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. In that run, the No. 12 seeded Cougars recorded upset wins over No. 5 seed North Carolina State and No. 4 seed Nebraska. In the Sweet 16 game, BYU played Connecticut tough throughout the first half down by just one 30-29, at the break but eventually lost to the No. 1 seeded Huskies, 70-51. UConn went on to win the NCAA Championship crown.

During the 2013-14 campaign, the Cougars had been getting votes in the poll throughout the season, getting within two spots out of the top 25 heading into the WCC tournament.
