Purcell named WCC Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. —Kalani Purcell has been named this week’s West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The honor is the first for Purcell this year and she’s the second BYU player to garner a conference player of the week honor this year.

Purcell, a 6-2 junior forward from Hamilton, New Zealand and John Paul High School, picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the Cougars’ win at Santa Clara. The 17 points were a BYU career high. She also dished out three assists, had team bests in blocks with two and tied for team and game highs in steals with three. For the third time on the season, Purcell also played all 40 minutes.

In the road win at San Francisco, Purcell had a game- and career-high nine assists and contributed six points, grabbed four rebounds and tied for game highs in steals with two while also making both free throws attempted.

For the week, she tallied 23 points, 16 rebounds, 12 assists, five steals and two blocks. Purcell averaged 11.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.0 blocks. She shot 37.5 percent from the field and 78.6 percent from the charity stripe.
