Road trip takes team to battle CS Northridge

Riding a three-game winning streak, BYU women’s basketball (3-0) takes its second road trip of the season playing at CS Northridge on Saturday. The game between the Cougar women and the Matadors tips off at 5 p.m. MST on Nov. 23 and can be heard live on BYU Radio.

About BYU
Currently, BYU has three players scoring in double figures and is averaging 74 points per game while holding opponents to 62. The team has also outrebounded its opponents, has recorded more assists and more blocks in all games played to date.

BYU returns nine letterwinners and two starters from a team that compiled a 23-11 record last season, finished tied for third in the West Coast Conference and competed for the second straight year in the postseason WNIT.

In the coaches’ preseason poll, the Cougar women were picked to finish fourth in the WCC regular season race behind San Diego, Saint Mary’s and league favorite Gonzaga. Senior center Jennifer Hamson was named to the preseason all-conference team, her second such honor.

About CS Northridge
Cal State Northridge currently has compiled a 2-2 record while playing all four games on the road. Saturday’s battle with BYU marks the team’s home opener. Three of their players are putting up double digits in points.

The Matadors were picked to finish third in the Big West Conference with junior Ashlee Guay being named to the Preseason All-Big West Team. CS Northridge finished with a 16-16 overall record, going 9-9 in league play last year. The team returns four starters and eight letterwinners.

BYU leads the series 3-0

Last Meeting
These two teams last played during the 2006-07 season in Provo with BYU picking up the 55-48 victory on Dec. 6, 2006. In that contest, current assistant coach Melinda Bendall (Johnsen) tallied five points, six assists and two steals in 36 minutes of playing time.

The visiting Matadors took a one-point lead, 26-25 at halftime, but BYU was able to capture the win starting the second half on a 13-4 run. BYU shot 34 percent from the field while CSUN shot 28 percent.

After the quick trip to California, the Cougar women return home to host two Pac-12 foes. Washington State comes to Provo on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m., and Arizona makes an appearance at the Marriott Center Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. Both homes games will be seen live on BYUtv.
