TEMPE, Ariz. - The BYU softball team gave up 16 runs in the second inning of its season opener on its way to dropping a 22-5 decision to Oregon State on Thursday in the Kajikawa Classic.

The Beavers' 22 runs were the most ever scored by a BYU opponent and the most since Penn State defeated the Cougars, 17-4, in 2007.

Senior Delaney Willard hit a two-RBI double off the top of the right field fence in the fourth inning and sophomore Jenna Goar hit the first home run of her career on a booming shot to center field in the fifth as a pair of only a few bright spots for BYU.

Senior Jessica Dugas had two hits and one run while senior Tiffany Messerschmidt and sophomore Lacey Millett each had one run and one hit apiece.

The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the third, with Millett earning the first run of the season after hitting a single, advancing to third on an errant throw, then reaching home on a single by Messerschmidt. After Dugas scored on a passed ball, Willard's deep double brought in junior JC Clayton and Messerschmidt.

Senior Krista Hicks made a great play at shortstop late in the game stopping a fast grounder on a diving effort before getting up and firing to first to get the runner out.

BYU continues play in Arizona with an 11 a.m. contest on Friday against No. 15 Texas A&M followed by a 1:30 p.m. game against Texas State. Fans can follow both games via the live stats link on the BYU softball schedule page.
