BYU Wins at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M -- The BYU softball team scored six runs in the second inning for the second game in a row to defeat New Mexico 8-3 and maintain first place in the Mountain West Conference on Friday.

BYU went to 9-1 in the conference and 35-15 overall, winning 23 of its last 24 games including a current 11-game win streak.

Senior Caschjen Atagi and junior Delaney Willard each hit RBI-doubles and senior Jessica Fitu added a two-run single to pace the Cougars.

Tiffany Messerschmidt scored the game's first run in the top of the first on a hit by Atagi to get BYU off to a quick start.

The lead jumped out to seven runs the following inning. Carly Duckworth, Stacie Graham and Jessica Dugas lead off the inning by reaching base. Kristin Delahoussaye grounded out to bring in Duckworth. Later in the inning again with the bases loaded Fitu singled up the middle for two RBI before Atagi immediately followed with a single, scoring another run for the Cougars.

Willard continued the scoring with BYU's second double of the inning for two RBI, putting BYU up 7-0.

Pitcher Paige Affleck retired the side in both the second and third innings in maintaining the lead, earning three of her eight strikeouts on the day. Affleck pitched a complete game for her 23rd win of the year.

New Mexico scored three runs midway through the game to cut BYU's lead to four, but the Cougars held on, scoring one more run in the top of the seventh when pinch runner Lacey Millett came in on a single by Duckworth.

BYU and New Mexico will face off again on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT in a live, televised game by the mtn.
