Cougars Swing Away to Beat CSU

PROVO, Utah -- The bats came out in full force for the BYU softball team as the Cougars defeated Colorado State 15-0 on 12 hits Friday at Gail Miller Field.

A day after hitting two home runs against New Mexico, senior Caschjen Atagi hit a three-run homer for BYU to highlight an eight-run second inning that put the game away for the Cougars, pushing their record to 27-15 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West Conference play.

Atagi totaled four RBI, two runs and two walks to pace BYU. Freshman Madisen Robb and senior Kristin Delahoussaye also each had a home run.

“We asked them to come out and compete hard and they did that tonight,” said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. “When they do that we’re tough to beat.”

Senior Paige Affleck claimed her second win in as many days to go 17-10 on the year, combining with freshman pitcher Tori Almond for a one-hit shutout. Affleck pitched three innings with four strikeouts before Almond came on in relief, striking out one with no hits, no runs and no walks allowed.

After freshman JC Clayton stole home on a double-steal attempt in the first inning, BYU pushed its lead to 9-0 after a big second inning. A double by freshman Carly Duckworth brought home junior Delaney Willard and Atagi to begin the scoring.

Senior Jessica Fitu hit a single deep to right field for another RBI one batter before Atagi’s line-drive shot to left center, her team-leading ninth home run of the season.

BYU tacked on three more runs in both the third and fourth innings, including back-to-back home runs by Robb and Delahoussaye. Robb’s two-run shot in the fourth was her second round-tripper of the week, while Delahoussaye’s solo home run was her fourth of the year.

BYU will look to go 4-0 on the week when the Cougars play game two against Colorado State on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT.
